Welcome Tammy McLellan

Tammy_700

We are happy to report that our amazing YCC Garden Manager this past summer, Tammy McLellan, is staying on with us as a Programming Coordinator. We are delighted to have Tammy’s talents and unique sense of wonder & whimsy at SFCM year round. The next time you walk through the Earthworks space, be sure to look for some of the playful touches that Tammy and her team added to the garden.

Although originally from California, Tammy has lived in NM for nineteen years, and Santa Fe for the past fifteen and considers New Mexico home. In addition to her role as Programming Coordinator here at SFCM she is also working on teaching certification from the Santa Fe Community College Teaching Academy.

Tammy took some time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions about SFCM and tell us about a few of her favorite things:

What is your favorite SFCM Exhibit?
This is a hard one to answer. I love the Bubble Table because I think bubbles are kind of magical, and I love the Earthworks garden space, in general; there are so many great things to explore out there.

What was one of your favorite childhood games?
One of my favorite games to play at school, as a child, was tetherball. Every morning a bunch of us would get to school early so we could play against each other. I loved beating the boys!

Did you have a favorite book or story as a kid?
My favorite books were books about horses, so I loved the author Marguerite Henry. Her books included Misty of Chincoteague, Stormy Misty’s Foal, and many others. She wrote 59 books based on true stories about horses and other animals that totally captured my imagination. I read them over and over.
Being a mom and a grandmother, one of my favorite things in the world to do, is read children’s stories. Some of my happiest memories are of reading books with my kids. I remember going to the bookstore in the mall and sitting on the floor in the children’s book aisle reading story after story to decide which ones we wanted to buy. The Rainbabies was a favorite, and the first time I read it to my girls, on the floor of the bookstore, I cried and cried because it was so beautiful. (I love stories that I can use different voices for the characters too!).

What are some of your hobbies?
Gardening (of course!), cooking/baking, hiking, reading and movies, I love to go to the movies!

Red, Green, or Christmas?
It depends on what type of food the chile is going on, Green Chile Cheeseburgers are the only way to eat burgers, but my Chile Cheese Fries and Frito Pies require red chile, and Huevos Rancheros should definitely be Christmas!

Anything else you would like to share?
I have really enjoyed working at the Santa Fe Children’s Museum this summer in the Earthworks Garden, and I am thrilled to be staying on in a more permanent capacity.  In fact it’s been the best job I’ve ever had.  This is such an amazing environment and organization, which really encourages  its staff, as well as the families that visit each day, to learn, be creative and really spread their wings.
