|
The Santa Fe Children’s Museum signature summer event, Ice Cream Sunday, takes place on Sunday, August 15, from noon to 5pm. Admission to the Museum and to Ice Cream Sunday is only $2. This year, loads of fun is happening, so you won’t want to miss it! In addition to vanilla, chocolate, & strawberry ice cream sundaes (with all the toppings), there will be carnival games such as a cakewalk and fishing for prizes. You can jump yourself silly in the fabulous jump-around or make a masterpiece with spin art. The Arroyo Hondo Volunteer Fire Department will be here with their super cool fire truck, so kids can climb aboard and check it out. The ever-popular Annie Rose the Flower Fairy will paint your face as you fancy, and our very special guests will be Louie and Lucy Lobo from the University of New Mexico (woof) and the popular Albuquerque Isotopes’ mascot, Orbit!
The lineup of entertainment includes Bellisma Irish Dancers, the Tai Kwon Do Institute, Pomegranate Studios Tribal Dancers, Santa Fe Talent Education’s young v iolinists
and violists, belly dance students from Saltanah Dancers, student musicians from Full Circle Guitar, and musicians Phoenix and Lucian Avalon.
New this year: The Physics Bus—a science museum on wheels that tours the country—is making a special stop at the Children’s Museum on August 15. The bus itself is a study in science and hands-on experimentation. From its 50-foot, molecule-tipped TV antennae mast to its vegetable oil powered engine, the bus is itself part of the fun, and something that kids talk about for hours afterward. A couple more reasons you might want to come: Root Beer Floats! Plus, all proceeds from Ice Cream Sunday benefit the educational programming at the Children’s Museum. See you there!

It's Time—An Object Theatre Performance Friday, July 30, 2010 8:00 am - 9:00 am Santa Fe Children's Museum
|
Loren Kahn Puppet and Object Theatre presents It’s Time, a new object theater production for the very young performed by Isabelle Kessler. Debuting in early 2010, It’s Time has been developed for ages 1-3 or 3-5. A character, dressed all in gray, arrives in her workshop. In this quiet gray nest, color is born, feather by feather. A yellow feather: the sunrise? A blue feather: storm of blue sky? Story fragments create a bird, then an egg -- what color will it be? Simplicity and tranquility are explored in this performance, which was created for the age when each moment is a discovery and magic is in the emotions. Using object theatre as a bridge between theatre, visual art and puppetry, Loren Kahn Puppet and Object Theater brings to life a hilarious and magical world, delighting tiny children and provoking reflection in teenagers and grownups.

Smokin' Bachi Taiko Holiday Performance Tuesday, December 29, 2009 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm Santa Fe Children's Museum
|
Smokin’ Bachi Taiko is a Santa Fe group that performs taiko drumming—incredibly loud, fast and synchronized percussion into which it incorporates elements of dance and martial arts. Taiko originated in Japan with Japanese drums (taiko) and percussion sticks called bachi. Modern taiko has only been performed as an art since 1951, when a practitioner named Daihachi Oguchi established his group. But taiko drumming itself has been around for quite a while, as an accompaniment to Shinto and Buddhist religious ceremonies, and in feudal Japan taiko were often used to motivate troops by setting a marching pace. Be prepared! This performance is sure to get you on your feet.$5 |

Zimbabwean Storyteller and Shonaslovakia Friday, July 31, 2009 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
|
Ignatius Mabasa − storyteller, novelist, poet, Zimbabwean − is bringing his unique talents to the Children’s Museum on July 31. For an added dimension, he’s teaming up with ShonaSlovakia, a marimba group known for their distinct fusion of diverse sounds. Mabasa specializes in unusual storytelling. In many of his stories, extraordinary characters make unexpected choices in unpredictable circumstances. Although stories like his don’t often appear in the West, his tales resonate across cultures to communicate universal themes. While Mabasa spins the yarn, ShonaSlovakia will keep the beat and mix the melodies on their traditional folk instrument called the marimba. This uncommon percussion instrument has keys or bars that are struck by a mallet to produce magical tones that just happen to go great with storytelling. The fun begins at 3:30pm. Come early and play beforehand or plan to stay after!
