Red Valerian (Centranthus ruber)

Meet the Red Valerian, aka “Jupiter’s Beard”, a beautiful flower that acts like a cafeteria for bugs! Because its flowers are shaped like long, skinny tubes, it is the perfect spot for butterflies and moths with long tongues to get a sweet treat. Hummingbird moths love it so much, it’s their favorite place to eat! It even invites the Two-Tailed Swallowtail, which is New Mexico’s state butterfly, to come over for a visit.
