Wood’s Rose (Rosa woodsii)

Meet the Wood’s Rose, a beautiful wild shrub that has made New Mexico its home—and it’s very welcoming to some of its neighbors! Its pink flowers have petals that stay wide open like a welcoming door. Because the flowers are so open, bees can easily find tasty snacks like nectar and pollen inside.

But watch out! This rose has a secret way to protect itself. Sharp, pointy prickles grow along its stems, telling hungry animals, “Please don’t eat me!” While the prickles help keep bigger animals away, the pretty pink flowers are always ready for a bee party.
