Discover Our Historic Water Catchment Tank

Originally installed in the 1990s, this steel tank was renovated in 2023 to ensure it continues its vital role in water conservation for years to come.

Why Rainwater Matters

This 10,000-gallon tank collects rainwater, a precious resource in our arid environment. By harvesting rainwater, we:

  • Sustain the museum’s entire property, including our community garden.
  • Reduce our reliance on fresh water and preserve local groundwater.
  • Lower our carbon footprint and combat aridification.

A Work of Art and Sustainability

The tank’s stunning mural was created by Autumn Dawn Gomez (Comanche/Taos Pueblo), co-founder of Three Sisters Collective, with the help of youth mentors from Tewa Women United and our Youth Conservation Corps (YCC).

Inspired by the flow of seasons and the interconnectedness of life, the design features pollinators, water creatures, and animals, transforming the mural into a seasonal calendar. This vibrant artwork celebrates:

  • Creativity
  • Water conservation
  • Community collaboration

The mural was inspired by a survey of SFCM’s community, including drawings from children attending SFCM’s 2023 summer camp, and reflects our shared vision for a sustainable future.
